The poverty rate in the region will reach 32.1% by the end of this year and extreme poverty will reach 13.1%, reported the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). He added that the projected levels of extreme poverty in 2022 represent a setback of a quarter of a century for the region.
«By the end of 2022, poverty will be at 32.1% of the population, a percentage that is equivalent to 201 million people and extreme poverty at 13.1% [82 million],» the agency said in a statement.
While the general poverty figure will mean a slight decrease compared to 2021, when the rate reached 32.3%, extreme poverty will increase, since last year it marked 12.9%.
«The projected levels of extreme poverty in 2022 represent a setback of a quarter of a century for the region,» warned ECLAC.
The agency explained that poverty in the region has affected the child population, adolescents, women between the ages of 20 and 59, and indigenous and Afro-descendant groups, all of them being more vulnerable than men.
The executive secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, assured in a press conference that «intersectoral public policy efforts are required to link the educational offer with health, work and social protection and to establish mechanisms to guarantee a level welfare and income in an era of volatility and uncertainty.«
ECLAC is a United Nations agency based in Santiago de Chile whose mission is to promote the economic and social development of the region.
